A single gene to coordinate the growth of motor neurons

E-mail Print PDF
Only one type of gene, called Hoxc9, serves as the primary "command center" of the motor neurons in the spinal cord is what researchers have discovered the Department of Physiology and Neuroscience NYU Langone Medical Center and Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The gene is part of the Hox family of genes known to govern the control of the overall pattern of development of the organism since orchestrate a cascade of gene expression in early embryonic stages, thus determining the overall structure and orientation of the various parties body.

"Selfish" by maternal

Researchers at Oxford University and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, have examined the impact on our behavior of these genes through a process known as genomic imprinting, "know" where they come from. Properly, Genomic imprinting is the process by which gene expression is different depending on whether they have been transmitted from father or mother.

According to the findings of researchers, given that historically women have changed their clan or family group than men, and therefore had less kinship with the many ...

First steps to a "translator" cerebral

A first step to allow paralyzed patients to communicate verbally so serious as those affected by the syndrome of "locked" (locked in), and unable to speak was made by a group of researchers at the University of Utah, which are able to develop an initial prototype experimental equipment potentially able to identify words that the patient would say by picking the brain signals through two grids of 16 micro-electrodes implanted beneath the skull, but without penetrating in the fabric ...

A possible treatment for lymphoma

E-mail Print PDF

A new possible therapeutic target for the treatment of lymphoma has been successfully tested in animal experiments at the University of Illinois. At low doses, a new drug called D-PAC-1 was shown to be able to stop tumor growth in three of the six dogs used in the study and induced partial remission of the disease in fourth.

The new compound does indeed sull'enzima procaspase-3, which when activated triggers ...

A fractal structure favors superconductivity

E-mail Print PDF
In the perfect and fascinating fractal geometry hides a new aspect of superconductivity in materials ideal for transporting electricity. This was revealed by an international study coordinated by Antonio Bianconi, Sapienza University of Rome, in collaboration with the CNR Institute of crystallography, the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN), University College London and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF ).

"Thanks to an innovative X-ray microscope developed in laboratories dell'Esrf, the European synchrotron radiation facility in Grenoble, we analyzed the atomic structure of ...
